It's imperative to understand what’s going on in the agriculture industry and how it will affect the product and distribution of food in the years to come. So, here are some of the trends we’re expecting to see in 2022:
New Generations
The average age of current farmers is around sixty, but it may not be the case in the next few decades. With the recent introduction of regenerative agriculture, younger generations are getting more invested in farming and agriculture. Regenerative agriculture focuses on topsoil regeneration, increasing biodiversity, improving the water cycle, enhancing ecosystem services, increasing resilience to climate change, and strengthening the health and vitality of farm soil. Although this is not a specific farming practice, proponents of regenerative agriculture use various sustainable agriculture techniques in combination, such as recycling as much farm waste as possible and adding composted material from sources outside the farm. Many researchers say that regenerative soil is the best solution for climate change mitigation.
The sustainability focus of regenerative agriculture appeals heavily to younger generations who prioritize sustainable practices and always look for ways to give back to the environment.
Food Safety
Food safety has always been incredibly important in agriculture. With the recent changes in the world and the increased focus on hygiene, it’s become even more of a focal point.
When it comes to agriculture, farmers, growers, distributors, packers, and anyone else involved in the supply chain need to be aware of potential contamination from one stage to the next. When contamination isn’t caught before it reaches the consumer, it results in outbreaks and recalls, which can be harmful to all of those involved.
Traceability software can track raw materials from the time they enter the facility to when they're released into the field, which increases supply chain visibility, tracks inventory, improves quality control systems, and reduces risk. Integrating traceability software into their film allows companies to keep track of their raw materials from the time they enter their facility to when they’re released into the field. This is an extremely valuable integration for food companies, especially produce, as it increases supply chain visibility, improves quality control systems, and reduces risk.

Direct Interaction with Consumers
Social media has become a mandatory platform for all business owners, and this applies to farmers too. Many farmers are now creating websites and staying active on social media to keep consumers involved with what’s going on at their farm, whether products and services or speaking to updates about their operations and the industry.
A great example of this is Donia Farms, one of our customers whom we recently shared a spotlight on. Check out their interview here!
