Next up for our staff spotlight is Dan Vassiliev, our Chief Operating Officer!

1) How long have you worked at Associated?

In 2021, I celebrated my 25th work anniversary at ALP!

2) Describe your journey at Associated so far.

My employment began in 1996 and progressed through many stages of our company. The road has been challenging but, at the same time, rewarding. I was fortunate enough to gain valuable hands-on experience in production positions such as Industrial Assistant, Rewinder, Material Handler, Plate Maker and Press Operator. The journey continued with me taking part-time classes at BCIT at night while working in the accounting department in an Accounts Payable/Payroll position. Eventually, upon completing my CMA designation, I returned to production as an Operations Manager, later becoming General Manager, and currently holding a COO position.

3) How would you describe the work environment?

It is demanding, challenging, and fulfilling. There's never a dull moment at Associated!

4) What is your favourite thing about working here?

It’s very encouraging and satisfying to work with positive and passionate people who support each other and encourage each other to be the best that they can be.

5) What's been your best day at work so far?

After reading "The Power of Now," I try to live in the present and make every day the best day, whether at work or at home!

6) What are you most proud of since working here?

The growth over the last 25 years has been remarkable! I'm proud to be a contributing member to our success.

7) What is the biggest challenge you've had since working here?

In the last few years, my challenge was to identify talented and motivated individuals that have strong potential to take our company to the “next level.” Of course, the people we employ directly impact our business and the company’s culture. Therefore, we always make sure that an individual fits into the overall picture. Having a great group of people is what makes success a reality!

8) Do you have a particular moment or memory at Associated that stands out for you?

The first interview I had with Rusty, our founder, stands out for me. Being a newcomer to Canada drove me to get a job with a great company. When I showed up for the interview, the receptionist told me they had already filled the position, so I asked to speak with the “boss.” He took the time to get to know me, as we discussed personal records back in my powerlifting days. I guess wearing my “Gator’s Gym” sweatsuit helped me to get hired, as it showed Rusty my commitment level and determination.

9) What does a typical day look like for you, and what are you currently working on?

My typical day revolves around overseeing administrative and operational functions, collaborating with our management team, and executing the vision set by Shaun, our President. Currently, we are working on planning next year’s expansion and business improvements.

10) Describe the advancement opportunities here.

Developing and promoting from within is always a top priority for our company! We value passion, loyalty, and a strategic mindset. Even though you can learn some tools from outside, the most important ones come from within.

11) How does Associated support professional development?

ALP encourages its employees to take courses, seminars, and workshops, as they can provide so much value and enable employees to update their skills. In addition, the company supports employee growth and professional development through mentoring and coaching. Seeing hunger for more knowledge in our team is always exciting and stimulating!

12) What is on your wish list for the next 5 years?

I am hoping to start travelling again, stay healthy, and continue to cherish each moment as it happens.

13) Given the chance, who would you be for a day?

I would love to be my 19-year-old self again to remind myself of my inspirations, feelings, and dreams. We tend to focus on how far we must go and forget how far we've come.
