Many consumers have switched to a new product when they’ve found a product’s packaging is unsatisfactory. Of course, there could be many reasons why a consumer would find packaging unsatisfactory; the packaging may not be sustainable enough for the consumer, it could be too wasteful, it may not function properly, it may cause inconvenience, and the list goes on. The bottom line is that packaging design can sway a consumer’s purchase decision significantly, so it’s imperative that your packaging delivers on all fronts and follows best practices:

Established USP

Your packaging must demonstrate the benefits of your product easily, which means your branding and messaging need to be clear and easy to digest. Use simple keywords and phrases to call out the benefits of your product in your packaging design.

You could even include a QR code to add extra benefits to your products. Consumers can scan the code from their phone with ease to access a custom platform that adds value to the purchase experience, your website, your social media, and so on.

Engage Consumers

Connecting with consumers proved more important than ever during the pandemic when consumers sought additional information and reassurance from the brands they purchase from. Consumers look for engagement or interactivity from a brand’s packaging, branding, and online presence, so it’s imperative to keep everything aligned and up to date. There are specific features you can include to engage consumers when it comes to packaging – check out our blog post on building a strong connection with consumers through packaging here.

It's also important to note that consumers now expect brands they purchase from to share the same values and beliefs, taking stands for certain causes and being vocal about current events. This is something that brands need to consider for their messaging.

Think Ahead

With the world changing so much in the last few years, companies have had to revisit their branding to ensure that they are up-to-date and received well by their consumers. However, investing in packaging and branding can be very costly. Although it’s difficult to predict future trends and influences in any industry, consider long-term when designing your packaging. Companies may successfully create packaging custom to a particular event or time, but this should only be for seasonal or limited-edition packaging.
