Consumers worldwide have been spending more than normal on health and hygiene since the pandemic began in 2020. With more focus on household care and hygiene, brands have to adapt to ensure that they stay engaged with their customers and target consumers. This means taking the following industry changes into consideration:
Lifestyle Focus
With the added attention on household cleaning, the pandemic has transformed household care brands into lifestyle brands. Home care has become almost an extension of self-care during the pandemic, and brands have to adapt to fit this transformation. This means becoming more active on social media, sharing consistent content and tips around how best to use products, and revisiting their packaging design to make sure it appeals to their audience.
Some brands have gone further and teamed up with wellness brands to collaborate on cleaning products that are specially formulated to provide “wellness benefits.” For example, a cleaning company partnering with an aromatherapy brand to develop cleaning products with anti-stress or relaxing scents.
Chemical-Free
The chemical-free movement has been growing over the last few years but was slightly disrupted during the initial years of the pandemic. Some consumers felt that chemical-free products weren’t enough to guarantee the best hygiene standards during the pandemic, while others doubled down and felt comfortable with chemical-free formulas.
Now, chemical-free cleaning solutions are more popular than ever, especially with the Millennial and Gen Z audience. These consumers look for “non-toxic” and holistic options for their households in an effort to support their overall physical and emotional wellbeing.
Sustainability Focus
Like all industries, brands in the household care market have to revisit their products, packaging, and operations to integrate sustainable initiatives and keep up with consumer expectations. As a result, refillable packaging has become extremely popular in this industry. Many brands now offer their products in stand-up pouches that conveniently refill the original packaging. E-Commerce
The e-commerce boom forced many industries online, and the household care and cleaning industry was no exception. Between grocery stores offering online ordering, cleaning brands offering their own subscription services, and smaller brands emerging with their own websites, it’s imperative to ensure that all product packaging can survive the extra touchpoints and transportation stages that come with e-commerce.
