Associated Labels and Packaging Announces Membership with 1% for the Planet

Vancouver, Canada, April 2018 – Associated Labels and Packaging joined 1% for the Planet, pledging to donate 1% of annual sales of their Non-GMO, Backyard Compostable Stand-Up Pouches to support nonprofit organizations focused on the environment.

“AssociatedLP joined 1% for the Planet to further demonstrate our commitment to the environment. Every little bit helps, and we hope to inspire other companies to do the same.”

Members of 1% for the Planet commit to supporting approved environmental nonprofit partners by donating the equivalent of 1% of sales through a combination of monetary, in-kind, and approved advertising contributions. Nonprofits are approved based on referrals, track record and environmental focus. There are thousands of approved nonprofits worldwide.

Collectively, 1% for the Planet Members have donated more than $175 million to environmental nonprofits to-date.

“We are thrilled to welcome Associated Labels and Packaging to our global network,” said Kate Williams, CEO of 1% for the Planet. “Currently, only 3% of total philanthropy goes to the environment and, only 3% of that comes from businesses. We need more business like Associated Labels and Packaging to do its valuable part to increase giving and support on the ground outcomes.”

About 1% for the Planet

1% for the Planet is a global organization that connects dollars and doers to accelerate smart environmental giving. We recognize that the current level of environmental giving – only 3% of total philanthropy – is not enough to solve the most pressing issues facing our planet.

Through our business and individual membership, 1% for the Planet inspires people to support environmental organizations through annual membership and everyday actions. We advise on giving strategies, we certify donations, and we amplify the impact of the network.

Started in 2002 by Yvon Chouinard, founder of Patagonia, and Craig Mathews, founder of Blue Ribbon Flies, our members have given more than $175 million to environmental nonprofits to date. Today, 1% for the Planet is a network of more than 1,400 member businesses, a new and expanding core of hundreds of individual members, and thousands of nonprofit partners in more than 60 countries. Video: Creating a Stand-Up Pouch

December 7, 2016

Have you ever wondered what goes into making your Stand-Up Pouch? Associated Labels and Packaging has created this quick clip to demonstrate what goes into this complex process.

Once your artwork has been thoroughly examined and approved by our in-house art department, we are able to create printing plates. These plates are sent to our press for set up. Our quality control team will conduct checks at various stages of the printing process to ensure our premium standards are met. Once the stock has been printed (and if required), we then send the printed rolls to another machine to be lacquered, followed by an additional machine to be laminated. Still two more machines left in the process! We need to slit or cut the rolls (which can be printed more than one across) to be able to fit our pouching machine. Finally the pouching machine folds, punches, heat seals the zipper and finally cuts the Stand-Up Pouch off the roll, ready for use!

As the flexible packaging industry gets more and more complicated, Associated Labels and Packaging is at the head of the pack. After four years of research and development, our team produced North Americas first Non-GMO, Backyard Compostable, Stand-Up Pouch. We are proud to be able to offer companies this environmentally sustainable alternative.

We also want to give a shout out to Sugar 2.0; such an amazing company to work with. It’s also nice to work with companies who are doing things to change the face of their industry. Sugar 2.0 “started with one father’s desire to lower his kids’ sugar intake — with a solution they’d actually love.”

VRS WPI Vilnius used color contrasts and windows when creating the flexible packaging for the re-design of NORVELITA. A vividly realistic cut out recreates the tail of the salmon- real hero of this flexible packaging. The black stock provides a perfect backdrop against the sharpness of the salmon meat, giving a standout effect that can be noticed from afar. The silver and orange colors – typical of the salmon- are used as font colors tying the whole design together. The refreshed flexible packaging targets the upmarket segment in a clever and differentiated way.

For many, coffee doesn’t feel like a luxury—it just feels like a necessity and a way to get the day started. Coronini Cafe is a way to make the cup a day a lavish experience. Their aim is to make the coffee experience a sophisticated and refined one in the growing business of micro roasting cafes.

Coronini Cafe oozes opulence. Black on black gives off an air of confidence, while the font and graphics look like they’re fit for a king. Gold and silver foil immediately express a sense of premium quality, attracting customers who truly want to revel in a delicious cup of coffee and not just get one and go.

“The concept is using labels on matte coffee stand-up pouches with glossy foil print of the logo. Labels are printed with touches of gold and silver foil, which would indicate prestige/luxury and sophisticated characteristics and a higher price point of their coffee. Using monogram is created and pattern, which can be used for various applications— such as flexible packaging”

Seven Generations of Caring Now Includes Packaging

January 25, 2016

seventh_generation_1Plant-based household cleaning products company Seventh Generation has a notable track record for innovation around eco-friendly packaging.

The new pouch is a multilayer Polyethylene film structure that provides functional and aesthetic advantages comparable to a mixed-material film structure, but solves the recycling challenge.

Their latest developments have all served to help Seventh Generation move closer to its 2020 sustainability goals around packaging, which include replacing all virgin petroleum-based plastics with recycled or bio-based materials, and making all of its packaging recyclable.

Until recently one packaging format that proved especially challenging from a recycling standpoint was the stand-up pouch used for the company’s Dishwasher Detergent Packs. Made from a mixed-material film laminate, the stand-up pouch could not be recycled, meaning 100% of the packages ended up in landfill.  Seventh Generation launched into retail a multilayer all-polyethylene stand-up pouch in Q4-2015 that is 100% recyclable.

“Our goal was to produce a recyclable stand-up package for our dishwasher pods, without sacrificing performance or aesthetics,” says Derrick Lawrence, Director of Packaging Development for Seventh Generation. Customers were asking for a more recyclable option, and turned demand into a reality.

Associated Labels and Packaging is here to work with customers on their sustainability packaging options. Please contact sales@associated-labels.com for more information.

King Kong, Your Majesty

June 24, 2015

Flexible_Packaging_Printer
Officially, King Kong is almost four Queen Elizabeth’s tall!

King Kong, professionally referred to as the Windmoeller & Hoelscher 52” MIRAFLEX AM 10 Colour Flexographic Printing Press, is flexible packaging royalty.

Much has happened since she arrived in our production facility just weeks ago. Our mechanical and electrical engineers are almost done and within a matter of days, she will be up, running and ready to perform her printing duties.

If you Googled “How Big is King Kong” and were hoping to find a post about the actual size of that enormous gorilla, we hate to break this to you: The Laws of Physics pose limitations to the size of a living organism, and because of gravity and some back woods wizardry we don’t understand, King Kong would be too heavy to actually exist on earth.

If that upsets you, we’re sorry, take your mind off of things and watch Her Majesty The Queen’s favourite Pembroke Welsh Corgis at Heathrow.

King Kong Ma’am.

King Kong Komes to Kanada

June 8, 2015

Layout1_v6_kingkong

After a long journey at sea King Kong, known in the industry as the Windmoeller & Hoelscher 52″ MIRAFLEX AM 10 Colour Flexographic Printing Press, has come out of her shipping crate. As the riggers set her up, we can see she is going to be real comfortable in her new home at Associated Labels and Packaging, Kanada (as the Germans say).

The Windmoeller & Hoelscher 52″ MIRAFLEX AM 10 Colour Flexographic Printing Press, has been designed for the highest quality printing of flexible packagings. Flexible packaging continues to rise while it is used in nearly all industries: dairy and cheese packaging, snack foods packaging, dried fruits and nuts packaging, coffee and tea packaging, pharmaceuticals packaging, vitamins and supplements packaging.  Transport packaging and over wraps for beverage bottles and cans or packaging of sanitary products have become more and more sophisticated too. Flexible packaging for the industrial sector such as building materials, chemical products or pet food require a high-quality print.

King Kong Hits Vancouver

May 29, 2015

KingKong

Oh no! It’s started! Our press baby has been home for two days and we’re already taking “artsy” photos of her fingers and toes (Translation: photos of gears and printing decks).

King Kong, known in the industry as the Windmoeller & Hoelscher 52″ MIRAFLEX AM 10 Colour Flexographic Printing Press, has finally arrived at Associated Labels and Packaging. From Germany, King Kong travelled across the Atlantic aboard the MSC LEIGH through the Panama Canal, up past the Golden Gate Bridge (Go 49ers) and right into the Port of Vancouver.

Even though King Kong is swaddled in shipping plastic, we can’t help but think our baby is cuter than other babies. She’s advanced too: The Windmoeller & Hoelscher 52″ MIRAFLEX AM 10 Colour Flexographic Printing Press, has been designed for the highest quality printing of flexible packagings. King Kong is at Sea

April 10, 2015

King_King_ShipAssociated Labels made a trip to Germany to check out its 52″ MIRAFLEX AM named King Kong. King Kong is now at sea, Canada bound aboard the MSC LEIGH Vessel (above) and the “Night Before Christmas” suspense is killing us! We can hardly sleep – we just want it to be here.

We’ve been tracking King Kong online and watching the little ship arrow move not nearly fast enough on this Live Ship Map. The anticipation is worse than falling asleep, in a middle seat, on a long flight – then waking up and realizing what felt like a long nap was only 5 minutes into a 12 hour flight.

The Windmoeller & Hoelscher 52″ MIRAFLEX AM 10 Colour Flexographic Printing Press, has been designed for the highest quality printing of flexible packagings. Quality demands on flexible packaging continues to rise while it is used in nearly all industries: dairy/cheese, snack foods, dried fruits and nuts, coffee and tea, pharmaceuticals, vitamins and supplements.  Transport packaging and over wraps for beverage bottles and cans or packaging of sanitary products have become more and more sophisticated too. Flexible packaging for the industrial sector such as building materials, chemical products or pet food require a high-quality print.

Flexible Packaging and Stand-up Pouch manufacturing has taken an innovative turn to mirror the change in consumer lifestyle. Conventional and rigid packaging has been replaced by more intricate designs that combine fresh credentials. Recent stand-up pouch product launches in such areas as pet food, soups and stews, sauces, baby food, snack food, fresh-cut produce, ready-to-eat meals, noncarbonated beverages, lawn and garden products, and household goods will contribute to further growth. Growth in demand for pouches is also a function of economics, as the lighter weight packages can vastly reduce both production and transport costs.

Check out our Stand Up Pouch Styles Guide and learn about the following: Doyen Style Gusset (Rounded Bottom) Stand Up Pouch, K Skirt Style Gusset Stand Up Pouch, Plough Style Gusset Stand Up Pouch, 2 Side Seal Bag (Folded Bottom), and 3 Side Seal Bag (Reinforced Bottom).
